Pilates for beginners: what to expect at your first class

A teacher guiding a beginner through a reformer exercise

Almost everyone who walks into our studio for the first time says a version of the same thing: “I've been wanting to try Pilates forever, but I didn't know where to start.” If that's you, this guide is the answer — a plain walkthrough of your first hour with us, so nothing on the day is a surprise.

First: you don't need to be fit, flexible, or experienced

Pilates was designed as a method anyone can start from wherever they are. The reformer's springs assist you just as much as they challenge you, which is why the same equipment works for a 22-year-old athlete and a 70-year-old recovering from surgery. Our group classes are capped at six people, so your teacher sees every rep — you will never be left copying the person next to you.

If you have an injury, a medical condition, or you're pregnant, tell us when you book. Several of our teachers specialise in clinical, prenatal, and senior-friendly work, and we'll place you with the right one.

What to wear and bring

  • Comfortable activewear you can move in — leggings or shorts and a fitted top.
  • Grip socks if you have them (regular socks are fine to start; we sell grip socks at the studio).
  • Water. We're in Molito Lifestyle Center, so there's plenty nearby if you forget.
  • Nothing else — reformers, props, and equipment are all provided.

How your first hour actually flows

Arrive about ten minutes early. You'll fill in a short health questionnaire and waiver (or do it online beforehand through your account), then your teacher will show you the reformer — the carriage, the springs, the straps — before anything moves.

The class itself runs about an hour: a gentle warm-up lying on the carriage, footwork to learn how the springs feel, then simple sequences for your core, legs, and back, finishing with stretches. A good first class feels controlled, not chaotic — you should leave feeling worked but taller, not wrecked.

Which class should you book first?

Look for Reformer Beginner on our weekly schedule — it runs every day, morning and evening. If you'd rather have a private introduction first, The Starter Package is built exactly for that: one private session where a teacher assesses your posture and walks you through the equipment, plus three group classes to put it into practice.

After that, most beginners settle into two or three classes a week. But start with one, see how your body responds, and build from there — the schedule has classes from 8 AM to 7 PM, seven days a week, so there's always a slot that fits.
